Council leader comments on the importance of broadband

“Broadband is essential” says council leader, Nick Rushton.

At cabinet on Friday 23 June it was decided that the Superfast Leicestershire project should continue to enable even more homes and businesses to the new technology. The leader is confident that it will bring stability and economic growth to our county.

£5m boost to superfast network

£5 million plans to start rolling out superfast broadband to the remaining three per cent of Leicestershire homes and businesses are set to move forward.

Leicestershire County Council wants to extend the network to the properties, which are mainly located in the most difficult to reach rural areas.

Since July 2014, the council has worked with BT to make superfast broadband available to more than 73,000 premises. By September 2018, it’s expected that a further 11,000 will benefit – taking the total to 97%. This third phase would increase coverage further.

Easter Campaign

Six cabinets went live before Easter providing more than 600 homes and businesses across Leicestershire with access to a fibre broadband service. To celebrate we ran a countdown campaign on Twitter using the hashtag #eastercab. Our bunnies were very busy as they made their way round Leicester and Leicestershire to stick eggs on the chosen green cabinets. Did you spot one?

The chosen cabinets were:

  • Barsby
  • King Street
  • Ashby Folville
  • Peckleton
  • Bevan Road
  • Sileby Road

The campaign reached over 35,000 people and got lots of people tweeting.

Cabinets experiencing challenges

These cabinets are currently experiencing some difficult challenges and are our top priority.

Great Glen 9 (parts of Great Glen) – we have found that this cabinet is having some temporary network issues. We are waiting to do a further survey so that we can find an alternative solution.

Narborough 37 (parts of Narborough) – A road closure is required to complete the installation of new fibre cables. We are working as quickly as possible with highways to get the road closure booked in.

Wymeswold 8 (Wymeswold) – The route to get power to from the green roadside cabinet will require some underground work on the road network. Openreach and our highways team will be out and about over the next few months to survey the area to assess what needs to be done.

Shepshed 13 (Shepshed) – This cabinet is on track to be connected to fibre broadband by September 2017. There is a blockage which we need to eliminate; our teams will be working closely together to find a solution and get the roadside cabinet connected.

A plan is in place and the connection to fibre broadband is currently on track for the end of September 2017.

Beaumont 32 (Beaumont) – A blockage found in this area is preventing delivery of a fibre service. We’re working to eliminate these as quickly as possible. This cabinet is on track for delivery in September 2017.

Leicester Central 96 (Ravensbridge Drive) – Some of our fibre cables will need to be extended to complete delivery. We are aiming to complete this as quickly as possible. Delivery due before September 2017.

Cabinets stood

Cabinets stood refer to the new green boxes which stand usually adjacent to the existing green roadside box in your village. You may have seen the new green cabinets appear recently and this new cabinet will house all the fibre connections; the existing green box houses the copper telephone lines. The fibre arrives at the cabinets through underground ducts, usually in the verges alongside roads, and it is only when this is connected to the stood cabinet, the cabinet goes live. A cabinet usually takes a minimum of six months to go live after it has been stood.
